Interview to Teresa de la Torre

Published on 23 October 2014

The OFREA project, led by ACCIONA Agua, is geared toward improving the quality of treated water and enhance its reuse in coastal areas. The project has been selected by the European Union as part of the LIFE+ program, aimed at supporting and boosting R&D and innovation projects with the greatest environmental potential. Teresa de la Torre, R&D and innovation engineer at ACCIONA Agua and head of the LIFE OFREA project, highlights the features of this European initiative.

Teresa, what is the main objective of the OFREA project which ACCIONA Agua is undertaking?

The main objective is to demonstrate the feasibility of advanced desalination technology for reusing high-salinity residual wastewater at lower costs than technologies currently available in the market. In areas such as the Region of Murcia, where the project is being rolled out, sea intrusion makes it impossible to reuse water for irrigation, so this technology would have a direct impact in this area.

How is the project structured and what types of technology do you intend to develop for reusing residual wastewater in coastal areas?

The technology being applied is direct or forward osmosis. This technology uses a saline solution under high osmosis pressure from which the water to be reused is then extracted. The process does not require hydraulic pressure for forcing water through and therefore is more energy efficient than reverse osmosis. The main challenge is recovering the water to be reused, and this is the process we are currently optimizing for the final design of the demonstration plant. We will then begin a demonstration phase in which we will evaluate the technology in the long term.

What is the duration and total investment of this European project?

The project was launched in October 2013 and will last for three years, receiving a total investment of €797,976.

Where are the various experiments going to take place and what results do you expect to obtain?

The demonstration plant will be built in San Pedro del Pinatar (Murcia). We expect to see process cost reduction, in terms of energy and consumption of reagents, of about 20% in comparison to currently available technology for this type of water, i.e., reverse osmosis.

And one last question, Teresa. What companies or agencies are involved in development?

The project is led by ACCIONA Agua, which handles development and demonstration of the technology. ESAMUR (Murcia Water Treatment Agency) also participates as the main stakeholder in applying the technology for boosting the reuse of water treated in the region.

Thank you very much.

Paper in the IFOA World Summit, 2014

Published on 08 October 2014

On September 18th and 19th, it took place in the Dom Pedro Palace Hotel of Lisbon, the IFOA World Summit (International Forward Osmosis Association Summit). Congress where Teresa de la Torre, Marina Arnaldos, Beatriz Corzo, Enrique Ferrero, Susana Navea, Jordi Bacardit and Jorge Malfeito, presented: “Evaluation of FO for wastewater reclamation with a focus on the selection of optimal draw solutions”.

The presentation analyzed the market niches for the FO technology in the field of municipal wastewater reclamation. Although this technology may not be energetically favorable compared to the conventional technology for high salinity water desalination (reverse osmosis), there are numerous advantages of this technology that makes it competitive, although this is very case-specific. These are basically a lower chemical consumption and less membrane fouling occurrence. Moreover, during the talk the results of the LIFE-OFREA project were presented, namely the selection of the membranes and the draw solution that will be used at the demonstration plant. The demonstration plant is now under construction and will be in operation early November.

ACCIONA Agua leads an EU project to improve water reuse in coastal areas

Published on 26 September 2013

ACCIONA, a global leader in renewable energy, infrastructure and water services, will lead a European Union research project to improve the quality of treated water in coastal areas and extend its use.

The EU selected the Acciona Agua-led OFREA project as part of the LIFE+ Programme, which supports high-potential environment-related R&D and Innovation projects.

The main goal of the OFREA project is to increase the percentage of reused wastewater in areas where the high salt content of treated water puts limits on its subsequent use. This is often the case in coastal areas. ACCIONA Agua will conduct research on new desalination techniques for wastewater treatment; it will also look at how to reduce energy costs and determine the additional treatments required for different end-uses.

The project will have three stages: a theoretical study, its application at a pilot plant and roll-
out to ACCIONA-managed water treatment facilities worldwide. The three-year project has a budget of close to one million euros.

The Sanitation and Wastewater Treatment Agency of the Spanish region of Murcia, which manages the region's sanitation and wastewater facilities, will also take part in the project.

ACCIONA Agua is a global leader in the efficient management of water, a limited and scarce resource. Its research, development and innovation activities contribute decisively to its technological leadership. ACCIONA Agua's investment in R&D has led to continued improvements in the efficiency and sustainability of its Operation and Maintenance operations, achieving reductions in energy consumption, odor and noise, and extending the use of treated water.

ACCIONA Agua has a research centre based in Barcelona (northeast Spain) (watch video) which employs 30 skilled professionals dedicated to applied R&D in the fields of desalination and water treatment.

The LIFE+ programme is the European Commission's environmental funding arm and one of the main tools at the service of the EU's environment policy. LIFE+ contributes to the application, development and improvement of the Union's environment policy, as well as helping to integrate environment issues in other EU policies. LIFE+ supports the development of new solutions for the EU's environmental problems and helps to apply the community-wide policy defined in the EU Sixth Action Programme on the Environment.
